Reading: Psalm 28-30
QUESTIONS
- In Psalm 28, David makes everything depend upon God hearing his prayer. What does it mean for God to hear our prayers? How do you know that he hears?
- Psalm 29 ascribes glory to God in powerful ways, some of which are even destructive and terrifying. To what extent do you recognize God’s majesty in similar terms? How might this change the way you pray?
- Verse 5 of Psalm 30 says “Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” In what ways does this sentence resonate with you? How does this image take seriously our sorrow and trials while also giving a sure hope of relief and gladness? Apply this truth to the particular distresses and struggles in your life.
DEVOTION
As we read through these Psalms, you can sense the agony with which the writer wants justice for the wicked (in 28:3-5.) David is making his plea to God to repay the wicked for their evil deeds and to give them the punishment they deserve. However, we too, like David, need mercy from the Lord to receive forgiveness for the sins we have committed.
As we worship the Lord and recognize not only His Power and His Holiness but trust him for His Omniscience and for His Justice, we can rest and have peace. In our worship of the Lord, may we have gratitude for our sins being forgiven and recognize the amazing privilege it is to be in relationship with the Lord. Truly our God who controls the waters, storms, animals, births, and all creation can take care of us. When we recognize this, trust Him, and confess our sins, the Lord will heal us and restore us to a right relationship with him and He will give us peace. May we forever give thanks to the Lord for granting us undeserved mercy and grace. Praise the Lord!
